One in four people would turn away the Virgin Mary if she turned up on their doorstep looking for help, according to a survey.
Coral Short, a Montreal artist has arrived in Vancouver to perform SINGLE MOM VIRGIN MARY every Saturday afternoon for the month of December at Georgia and Granville Street.
Short combines high camp theatre, body as sculpture and guerilla street art creating a contemporary art practise seldomly seen on the streets of Vancouver. Short will remain motionless in the blue and white robes of the iconic Jewish maiden, her long flowing brown hair, very pregnant belly and a peaceful expression on her face. She will perform the Virgin Mary’s famous matriarchal gestures surrounded by a flurry of frantic holiday shoppers. After Christmas Day a child will be born through the legendary immaculate conception.
Short wishes to call attention to the status of single mothers who are living at or below the poverty line due to many budget cuts to their social programs. Single mothers are also more apt to suffer from stigmatization, discrimination and abuse/violence.
All donations to the SINGLE MOM VIRGIN MARY statue will be going to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. This time of year is the time to think of others and show generosity to those in need. Please visit on this site to give donations even if you can’t make it downtown to see this thought provoking performance. A few clicks will make a difference in a single mom’s life today during this holiday season.
The Hammock Residency is supporting Short in this endeavour. This piece is dedicated to all the strong single mothers out there who are full of grace.
